My Work

In 2019 I established a laboratory research group in RCSI focused on multiple myeloma, with a particular focus on precision medicine, predictive genomics and understanding mechanisms of therapy resistance in high risk disease. Within that group I supervise a number of PhD students, post-docs and a research assistant. Collaborations in multiple myeloma involve NUIG, Queens University, Belfast, Dana Farber Cancer Institute Boston, many excellent researchers within RCSI and several industry partners. I am also the academic head of the Department of Pathology at RCSI and in that role I lead the research for the Beaumont RCSI Molecular Pathology laboratory. This NCCP accredited laboratory focuses on molecular testing of a wide variety of solid, blood and neurological cancers and provides ample opportunities for students to develop research proposals related to precision medicine and targeted therapeutics for cancer.

Potential Projects

Within the Departments of Haematology and Pathology at Beaumont Hospital and RCSI there are numerous opportunities to participate in basic laboratory, translational and clinical research. I am PI on a number of clinical trials in multiple myeloma and keenly focused on the development of investigator initiated studies in this disease. Within the multiple myeloma laboratory there are lots of opportunities to work on existing successful projects and develop novel ideas. This laboratory is closely linked with the Molecular Pathology laboratory and both laboratories are staffed by highly experienced scientists with expertise in NGS, data science and artificial intelligence applications for cancer research. Therefore ICAT PhD candidates will have access to state of the art technology and human resources that will facilitate successful PhD completion alongside clinical training.
As a supervisor I am strongly focused on career development and mentorship of my laboratory members and clinical fellows. Having completed the first iteration of the ICAT fellowship (then called the NSAFP) I have a unique understanding of the challenges faced by clinical doctors entering the research environment, and particularly balancing their clinical and research commitments.

Emerging Supervisor

Co supervisors include a large network of national and international cancer experts who are physicians and scientists. Current projects that I co-supervise or collaborate on are with the following researchers;

- Dr Triona Ni Chonghaile, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland
- Dr Jamie O Sullivan, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland
- Professor Michael O'Dwyer, National University of Ireland, Galway
- Dr Eva Szegezdi, National University of Ireland, Galway
- Dr Lisa Crawford, Queens University Belfast
- Professor Irene Ghobrial, Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Boston, MA, USA
- Dr Salomon Manier, Lille University, France
