The work undertaken in my lab (Cardiovascular Device and Therapeutics - CarDevT lab - https://cardevt-lab.eu/) within the Tissue Engineering Research Group (TERG) at RCSI focusses on the development of new generation cardiovascular devices and therapeutics. Most recently we have developed a novel device for Heart Failure with preserved Ejection Fraction (HFpEF). This research was supported by the Enterprise Ireland through their Commercialisation Fund. We have also developed a heart model to mimic both a healthy heart and a heart in failure with preserved ejection fraction. The model enables potential heart failure treatment devices to be examined in terms of their effect on the left atrium and the left ventricle. This work has led to an RCSI spinout in pipeline and MedTech startup - Pumpinheart Ltd. (https://pumpinheart.com/).

Further pre-clinical work on HFpEF device includes the development of an anchoring system, catheter delivery system, power management and sensory system. Potential PhD students, especially with a background in engineering can work on these workstreams along with devising a First in Human clinical strategy.
I collaborate with clinicians and engineers including Prof Jim O'Neill, Prof Robert Byrne, Prof Ellen Roche and Prof Garry Duffy.
