My Work

My research focuses on the relationship between androgens in human metabolic health and disease. I have a particular interest in the consequences of androgen excess in women and androgen deficiency in men. My group focuses on the impact of androgen excess and deficiency on skeletal muscle energy balance as a potential mediator of diabetes, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and cardiovascular disease. We utilise gold standard human physiology phenotyping techniques such as stable isotope studies, hyperinsulinaemic-euglycaemic clamps and muscle biopsies. In conjunction with collaborators, we employ a range of methodologies to profile the metabolic consequences of disturbances in androgen metabolism, including proteomics and non-targeted Metabolomics.

Potential Projects

Diseases studied: polycystic ovary syndrome, male hypogonadism, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, pituitary disease, adrenal insufficiency.

Metabolic phenotyping: stable isotope studies, insulin clamps, proteomics, metabolomics
