ICAT Alumni Update – Peter Barrett

ICAT Alumni Update – Peter Barrett

In November 2021, Dr. Peter Barrett was awarded his PhD (without corrections) from UCC. During the ICAT Programme, he used large-scale epidemiological data from Sweden to investigate associations between adverse pregnancy outcomes and long-term risk of maternal renal disease. This was a collaborative project between the School of Public Health and INFANT Research Centre in UCC with partners in Karolinska Institutet, Sweden.

Peter published eight peer-reviewed papers as part of his PhD, including in PLOS Medicine, American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology, BMC Medicine, and JAMA Network Open. He received numerous awards for his work, including the William Stokes Award from RCPI (2019) and Best Clinical Abstract among young researchers at the World Congress of Nephrology (2020). During his PhD, Peter also completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning from UCC, and a Diploma in Healthcare Management from the HSE Leadership Academy.

Where is he now?

Peter is currently working as a Specialist in Public Health Medicine in the Department of Public Health in Cork and as Senior Clinical Lecturer in the School of Public Health, UCC. He remains actively involved in applied public health research and is gaining further experience of student supervision, including undergraduate and postgraduate medical students, MPH students, Academic Interns and Specialist Registrars. He thoroughly enjoyed his experience of the ICAT programme and would advise Specialist Registrars who may be interested in a clinical academic career to consider applying.
