My PhD, conducted through the ICAT programme, applied molecular multi-omic (transcriptomic, metabolomic) approaches to characterise the kidney-protective effects of intentional weight loss in animals and humans with diabetic kidney disease. I have obtained further experience with singIe-cell and spatial transcriptomics through the Humphreys Lab at Washington University in St. Louis. I have also studied the role of circulating biomarkers in predicting adverse outcomes in patients with chronic kidney disease.

I intend to apply systems biology and data science techniques to develop precision medicine approaches for predicting and preventing cardiovascular and kidney complications in people with obesity, diabetes mellitus, and chronic kidney disease.
Potential projects would centre on the translational application of advanced transcriptomic technologies (single-cell, spatial) to understand mechanisms of diabetic kidney disease progression and how disease-modifying therapies protect against heart and kidney complications. This work would be conducted at the Diabetes Complications Research Centre, and could be combined with complementary clinical research initiatives focused on the cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic syndrome through the St. Vincent's University Hospital nephrology department.
I plan to primarily co-supervise with Prof. Catherine Godson and the wider research team at the Diabetes Complications Research Centre, University College Dublin. However, I am open to discussing potential projects with candidates from all institutions across Ireland. I would help to guide and supervise systems-level analysis of transcriptomic data (bulk, single-cell, spatial) as well as validation and further mechanistic interrogation in the wet-lab (focused on heart and kidney protection) with colleagues at the Diabetes Complications Research Centre.
