My Work

The Cameron Scholars team conducts applied research in population health, translating evidence into service design and system change using mixed methods, co-design, and implementation science. We are working in partnership with HSE colleagues to design a Population Health Approach for the health system. Our novel studies on the use of GLP-1 receptor agonists examine access, prescribing, costs, supports, and experiences across a wide range of stakeholders to inform weight management practice in Ireland. Informed by international evidence of structural inequities in workplaces (BMJ Open, 2023 and BMC Medicine, 2024) we lead a focused programme on gender equity in research and academia including our HEA EDI award on embedding gender-responsive and intersectional approaches in research and institutional policy and the ELEVATE project, developing gender-informed workload allocation models (WAMs) in Irish higher education. For Strand 5 of the RCSI SPH Converge Centre we aim to strengthen partnerships for population health solutions for chronic condition management. We established the RCSI Health Equity Research Alliance (HERA) to advance health equity through collaborative research and knowledge translation and our online MSc in Population Health Leadership equips health professionals to lead on population health policy, systems design, and practice.

Potential Projects

We welcome PhD applicants interested in applied research that informs policy and practice in population health and health systems.
1. Gender Equity in Academic and Health Systems (Post-WAM Study)
Building on the WAM study, this PhD will design and evaluate sustainable interventions—such as transparent workload allocation and equitable recognition—to improve gender equity in academic health settings, assessing impacts on career progression, organisational culture, and measurable equity outcomes to inform institutional and national policy.
2. Trauma-Informed Health Systems for Multiple Long-Term Conditions (TRANSFORM)
Subject to funding, this project will examine how trauma-informed approaches can be embedded in integrated care for people with multiple long-term conditions. Areas may include analysing lifecourse pathways linking adversity to multimorbidity, co-designing trauma-informed care models, or developing policy tools to support implementation.
3. Equitable Integration of GLP-1 Therapies in Obesity and Chronic Disease Care
This project will examine the health system and equity implications of GLP-1 receptor agonists for weight management. Using administrative, survey, and qualitative data from patients and providers, the PhD will inform equitable and sustainable integration of GLP-1 therapies into chronic disease management.
4. Embedding Equity in Health Research Practice and Systems
This project will examine how equity can be embedded in health research design, conduct, and translation. The PhD will assess use of equity frameworks, identify gaps in inclusion and reporting, and co-develop tools to support equitable study design, analysis, and dissemination. Findings will inform policy, funding requirements, and research training.
5. Embedding Equity in Research Ethics Committee (REC) Review Practices
This project will examine how equity can be embedded in REC review processes to support inclusive research. The PhD will assess current practices, identify gaps in equity and participant burden, and co-develop guidance for equity-informed review. Findings will inform national ethics guidance and strengthen equitable research governance.
