My Work

My research mostly focuses on the epidemiology of gastrointestinal cancers and pre-malignant conditions, particularly Barrett's oesophagus and oesophageal adenocarcinoma, colorectal polyps and colorectal cancer. In addition to mainstay interests in the role of modifiable risk factors (such as smoking, alcohol and nutrition) in cancer risk and progression, I have specialist interests in clinical epidemiology related to gastrointestinal pathology diagnosis trends and concordance, and molecular pathology epidemiology. Interdisciplinary research is key to all research in our research group.

Potential Projects

My research projects typically involve conducting systematic review(s), or secondary analysis of existing large datasets relevant to gastrointestinal cancer epidemiology and/or collation of data to enable our molecular cancer epidemiology projects. Previous clinical PhD students have, for example, studied the epidemiology of Barrett's oesophagus using data from our large population-based register in Northern Ireland, or data analysis within stratified medicine projects, for example to investigate the interaction of medications (aspirin and statins) with known biomarkers (eg. p53 expression) to evaluate their association with colon cancer survival. Our previous clinical PhD students tend to enjoy gaining expertise in statistics and data handling (always in demand!), the flexibility of these 'dry' data analysis projects, the clinical relevance to their work, and typically gain ~5 high-impact publications during their PhD projects. In return I expect enthusiastic students who are willing to contribute their clinical expertise to our large group of dynamic researchers in the Cancer Epidemiology Research Group at Queen's.
