International placement report

International placement - Upskilling in cell culture techniques

Dr Alison Lee is a Veterinary Pathologist whose PhD research focuses on the influence of oral bacteria on the behaviour and growth of oral squamous cell carcinoma in cats, with potential translation to human oral cancers. Alison is supervised by Professor Gary Moran (TCD), Professor Hanne Jahns (UCD), and Professor Ann Hopkins (RCSI).

Alison visited the Maurice Kornberg School of Dentistry at Temple University in Philadelphia, USA, to work with Professor Nezar Al-hebshi and Dr Doaa El-hadedy. The primary focus of her placement was to learn specialised neoplastic cell culture techniques to aid in planned bacterial and cell co-culture experiments. As well as benefitting from training in these techniques, Alison can transfer these skills on her return to her research group, and has delivered talks at the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, at the ICAT Retreat, and the Microbiology Society Annual Meeting.
