Research interests include the pathophysiology, treatment and outcomes of sleep apnoea syndrome, the cardiovascular and metabolic consequences of the disorder, basic cell and molecular mechanisms and consequences of intermittent hypoxia, in addition to sleep disturbances in COPD and other chronic respiratory disorders. We are also closely involved in the evaluation of novel ambulatory monitoring devices for sleep disorders, and have more recently become actively involved in research and policy matters relating to driving risk in sleep apnoea. We have a multidisciplinary research group based in St. Vincent?s University Hospital and the UCD Conway Institute and have ongoing collaborations with other research groups within UCD and internationally.
We have active projects exploring the prevalence and mechanisms of nocturnal hypertension in patients with sleep apnoea, in addition to projects exploring the molecular interactions of intermittent hypoxia with adipose tissue in the generation of inflammation, insulin resistance, and cardiovascular dysfunction. We are also a core member the European Sleep Apnoea Database (ESADA) project that includes over 20 academic sleep centres throughout Europe, and presently holds a database of over 20,000 patients with sleep apnoea.
