My lab works on innate immunity and inflammation. Several projects are underway including Immunometsbolism, inflammasomes and Toll-like receptors. We have recently demonstrated that succinate dehydrogenase plays a key role in the repurposing of mitochondria in macrophages. This event drives the inflammatory phenotype in these important cells and may be amenable to therapeutic manipulation. This work was recently published in Cell (PMID: 27667687).

The project in my lab will concern metabolic reprogramming in macrophages in inflammatory diseases. Specifically we will explore the potential of succinate dehydrogenase inhibitors as anti- inflammatory agents in models of disease. We will also investigate how SDH is endogenously controlled in macrophages, with a specific focus on Trap1 and itaconate acid. These experiments are likely to give important new insights into the pathogenesis of inflammatory diseases.
