Maternal and Fetal Medicine, Perinatal Palliative care

At CUMH/UCC, I lead the multi-disciplinary pregnancy loss research group, combining supervising a large group of doctoral and masters students with collaborative clinical research in this area. I was a co-applicant on the Irish Fetal and Neonatal (INFANT) Clinical Trial Network, funded by the Health Research Board in 2015, having worked with the Perinatal Ireland research consortium since 2010. In June 2016, I joined the INFANT centre as an SFI-funded Principal Investigator. My research interests include prenatal diagnosis, miscarriage, pregnancy loss, stillbirth, perinatal palliative care, complicated multiple pregnancy, and qualitative research in Clinical Obstetrics. My work has resulted in >90 peer-reviewed original papers and >200 published conference proceedings; with a current h-index of 25 (2016). I have recently been appointed as National Implementation lead for the pregnancy loss/perinatal death Bereavement Care Standards.

Selected forthcoming projects:-
1. Do the National Standards for Bereavement Care following Pregnancy Loss and Perinatal Death provide a feasible, acceptable, and appropriate strategy for improving bereavement care?. Mixed Methods Implementation Study.
2. The role of Perinatal Palliative care in the management of pregnancies complicated by major fetal abnormality. Mixed methods study with bereaved parents and healthcare professionals aiming to assess knowledge, access, attitudes and competency.
3. Awareness of Stillbirth among healthcare professionals, parents and the general population. Mixed methods study aiming to examine the differing understanding of causes and risk factors, as well as prevalence and recurrence.
