My Work

We are interested in the basic mechanisms of atopic dermatitis (eczema), the most common chronic inflammatory disease of children in the developed world. Our approaches include evaluation of genetic mechanisms, the role of the microbiome, the structural biology of the skin barrier and the systemic effects of this skin inflammation on the affected child or adult. We incorporate detailed clinical studies, skin barrier function studies, laboratory studies including the use of skin equivalents.
The larger questions we address are best thought of as:
What causes Atopic Dermatitis?
What stages are there in disease development?
Which therapeutic targets can we identify through careful study of this disease?
Can we stratify patients and personalize their therapeutic approaches?

Potential Projects

I would be happy to discuss in detail with potential applicants projects in the domains outlined above. A project can be tailored towards our research strengths and the applicant's interests.
