My Work

My research interests explore the role of blood coagulation and extracellular vesicles in the aetiology, management and therapy of clinical disorders. I co-direct the UCD Research Group SPHERE in the Conway Institute, Belfield with UCD Associate Professor Patricia Maguire. This novel translational research group was launched in September 2015 at the annual VTEdublin international thrombosis conference (www.vtedublin.com) which I co-organize. The launch of SPHERE was welcomed by the Irish Minister for Health Dr Leo Varadkar in his address to conference delegates. SPHERE brings together clinical and academic collaborators nationally and internationally, harnessing unique tools to diagnose and understand a host of inflammatory-based diseases, including thrombotic disorders.

The acronym SPHERE describes the state-of the art translational interests of the group, which will focus upon "Systemic inflammatory disorders: role of blood Particles, Haemostatic factors and ExtRacEllular vesicles". Our work has been published in the top journals of our field including Blood, Proceeding of the National Academy of Science and Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis. We have submitted two invention disclosures and a patent application is pending, with a second to be submitted shortly.

Potential Projects

1. Extracellular vesicles in normal and complicated pregnancy: diagnostic and management implications

2. Harnessing endothelial protective properties of low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) for novel therapeutic strategies in cancer

Please contact me directly at fniainle@mater.ie for further details of these and other exciting potential projects. I would be very keen to speak to potential applicants as early as possible. I have a strong track record of supervising clinician scientists and work very closely with my mentees to help them deliver their goals on target. Previous and ongoing PhD mentees regularly publish their work in high-impact journals and present regularly at international conferences. An aspiring clinician scientist would be joining a vibrant translational Research Group with a rich network of top national and international clinical and academic experts. I look forward very much to hearing from you.
