Potential Projects

QUB in collaboration with the Regional Intensive Care Unit at the Belfast Trust has one of the most active research programmes in Intensive Care Medicine in the UK and Ireland. Prof McAuley, Dr Murali Shyamsundar and Dr James McNamee working within RICU, along with Dr Cecilia O?Kane (Respiratory physician with an interest in ARDS), Dr Ronan McMullan (Medical microbiologist with an interest in critical care infection) and Dr Bronagh Blackwood (Senior Lecturer with an interest in mechanical ventilation) support the clinical and translational research programme. Prof Cliff Taggart and Dr Beckie Ingram at QUB support the basic science research programme.
We have a major research focus on ARDS from basic science, through translational research to clinical trials, with a focus in developing new therapies for ARDS. In addition we have research programmes in mechanical ventilation, nosocomial infection, delirium as well as methodology in critical care studies. It is expected that the PhD student would participate in one of the research programs described.
The Department currently supports a variety of PhD research projects in both basic science and clinical research with currently 12 students undertaking PhD projects and has a substantial track record in successfully delivering research training. Over the last 10 years, the department has produced 22 MDs/PhDs.
