One of the main areas of my clinical research has been in evidence-based randomised peer-reviewed paediatric haemato-oncology clinical trials, focusing on clinical questions within all domains of child and adolescent blood and cancer. I am an active member / principal investigator (UK and European Study Groups) involved in international peer-review trial design.
One of my main areas of translational research for the past two decades has been elucidating the relationship between the protein C (PC) activation pathway and the systemic inflammatory response sepsis syndromes. To date, this research has made significant clinical and basic scientific contributions to the emergence of a new paradigm regarding the patho-biology of severe sepsis / septic shock.

Although the majority of children treated for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) are cured, disease recurrence and treatment related toxicities remain important, and often unpredictable, clinical issues. Recently, evaluation of multiple biologic characteristics of both the patient and leukaemia blast cells has improved prediction of treatment outcomes. A number of studies have shown that response to chemotherapeutic agents, as well as drug-related toxicity, can vary with genomic variation/polymorphism frequency. Therefore, we are interested in real-time screening, using NGS platforms for germline genetic variation that is associated with relapse risk and drug-related toxicities.
