My research objectives are to achieve actionable knowledge in translational medicine to improve maternal and child health outcomes. I lead an international multidisciplinary research programme aimed at the development of a neonatal screening test for the early detection of Autism, with postgraduate training at the core of my research programme. Autism begins in the womb, and as such, the role of perinatal mental health, stress, and maternal immune activation/inflammation on the developing brain are pertinent questions in neonatal neurodevelopmental, where both maternal and fatal health is at risk.
I have expertise in basic science, clinical-OMICS, biomarker discovery, bioinformatics, and the application of computational methods such as
Artificial Intelligence (AI; machine learning) for biomarker discovery and risk stratification. My research has been influential in the identification of a biomarker signature in children with at risk mental state, which has resulted in multiple collaborative partnerships. More recently, I have applied these skills to translational research in perinatal and paediatric medicine. I welcome the opportunity to collaborate on such projects in the future.
Prof Deirdre Murray, UCC.
