Dr. Golden is a physicist interested in the development and application of sophisticated data analytics in signal and image processing - including AI - to improve the diagnosis, understanding and treatment of human disease.

Between 2011-2016, he was an Associate Professor of Genetics at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City, where his group worked with fellow clinicians to identify genomic markers associated with transplant rejection, determine specific blood plasma signatures associated with acute radiation sickness and studied the role endogenous retroviruses have in genome stability. He was also closely involved in the medical school's NIH funded Medical Science Training Programme (the US equivalent of ICAT).

Recent work on his return to Galway has included studying the use of genomic copy number alterations to better inform breast cancer diagnosis and to understand their association with disease burden in neurodevelopmental disorders, and also in the use of radiogenomics to guide precision radiotherapeutic intervention. He teaches graduate modules in genomics and in radiobiology to the MSc in Biomedical Genomics and MSc in Medical Physics programmes at NUI Galway.

He was recently awarded funding under the HRB's COVID-19 Rapid Response Research & Innovation Programme for 'Expediting the diagnosis of COVID-19 in a clinical setting using AI enabled analysis of CT scans'

Potential Projects

Dr. Golden is interested in working with prospective MD/PhDs curious about

- the fusion of radiomic and genomic data in a precision oncology context to both improve diagnosis of disease sub-types, but also to inform therapeutic intervention, particularly immunotherapy

- understanding the genomic basis for radiosensitivity, and its exploitation clinically

Both project themes involve the use of advanced data analytics, imaging and machine learning/AI, and would suit MD/PhD candidates with a facility in quantitative methods and an interest in collaboration (with partners in the US/Canada).

Dr. Golden is also happy to co-supervise prospective MD/PhDs with fellow NUIG clinicians he has worked with in the past including Dr. Michael Conall Dennedy (Pharmacology & Therapeutics/Endocrinology), Professor Aoife Lowry (Surgery/Oncology), and Professor Laurence Egan (Pharmacology & Therapeutics/Gastroenterology).

Dr. Golden has extensive mentoring experience, with former PhD students now either faculty/fellows in their own right at Caltech, Penn State University, Virginia Tech, the Mount Sinai Hospital, St. Jude's Research Hospital and UC Irvine School of Medicine.
