About The Tobin Lab:
Skin/hair pigmentation in health & disease, Hair growth regulation in health & disease, Immune-mediated skin/hair disorders, Wound-healing, Skin aging.
Des is Full Professor of Dermatological Sciences, Director of the UCD Charles Institute of Dermatology, and a Conway Senior Fellow.
Using in vitro and ex vivo assays, our lab examines the cellular and molecular control of key skin and hair follicle biologic process in health (incl. aging) and disease. Specific disorders of interest include melanoma, vitiligo, canities, alopecia areata, psoriasis, vitiligo, Hidradenitis suppurativa & diabetic wound healing.
We also develop new technologies in skin care.
Potential projects of interest could include the following focused on the human system :
Understanding the transitions between normal melanocytes, nevocytes, and melanoma cells (in situ and metastasis)
Understanding the contribution of the hair follicle (and other appendages) to skin wound healing
Understanding the contribution of red/yellow melanin (pheomelanin) to melanoma-genesis
Understanding the interaction of light (UVR and Visible) on skin
Understanding autoreactivity/autoinflammatory processes in human skin and hair follicle
Understanding the Skin-Gut axis
Understanding the Skin-Brain axis
