About The Caplice group:
We are a multidisciplinary research team working in state of the art facilities at UCC investigating new mechanisms of disease in cardiometabolic disease including left ventricular hypertrophy, diastolic heart failure (HF-PEF) and atrial myopathy. We have recently made fundamental discoveries identifying new inflammatory pathways in this disease using a clinical scale preclinical model. We also study specific inflammatory interactions between the gut microbiome and intestinal epithelium in vitro and in vivo. We have developed beyond state of the art therapies to target cardiometabolic disease. We intend to translate these findings to first in man human studies.
Our lab has a track record of innovative device and cell therapy approaches to vascular disease. We are currently developing a novel microbypass cell therapy device for lower limb critical ischemia. We have already translated bench discoveries to successful first in man trials in cardiac cytoprotection post myocardial infarction,
NC is Full Professor of Cardiovascular Sciences, Director of UCC, Centre for Research in Vascular Biology (CRVB) and a PI in APC Microbiome Ireland. He is a consultant interventional cardiologist at Cork University Hospital. He has mentored several MD and PhD postgraduates to Young Investigator Awards at the Irish Cardiac Society, Euopean Society of Cardiology , Ameican Heart Association and American College of Cardiology.
