My Work

Current research activities encompass several streams:
1. development and maturation (focus on musculoskeletal)
2. influence of loading and exercise (focus on musculoskeletal)
3. cartilage and bone repair/regeneration (tissue engineering, mesenchymal stem cells, immunology)
4. large animal translational models (current ongoing models osteochondral joint defect models (goat), joint inflammation models (horse), spine (ultrasound guided injections, disc defect model (goat))
5. wildlife projects (deer gps collaring and tracking, health status deer population ireland)

Potential Projects

Currently recruitment is ongoing for several phd students on the following projects:
1. Optimisation Of Translational Large Animal Models (UCD funded, 2022-2025)
2. Translational disc defect and repair model development (includes advanced ultrasound): Personalised Medicine For Intervertebral Disc Regeneration- Integrating Profiling, Predictive Modelling And Gene Activated Biomaterials—Integrate (Horizon 2020, 2022-2025)
3. Translational osteochondral defect repair model development (includes arthroscopy): SFI Spokes funding and Horizon 2020 Printing Spatially And Temporally Defined Boundaries To Direct The Self-Organization Of Cells And Cellular Aggregates To Engineer Functional Tissues (4d-Boundaries) (Horizon 2020, 2022-2026)
4. Nanostructured Osteochondral Scaffold: Novel Biomimetic Triggers For Enhanced Bone Regeneration (Nano-Scores) (SFI, continuation ongoing project with industry involvement)
5. Joint development and effect of loading in the goat from birth to maturity (diverse funding, 2022-2030)
