My Work

I am the Research Director of the Irish Centre for Applied Patient Safety and Simulation (ICAPSS; www.nuigalway.ie/icapss/). The ICAPSS consists of academics and clinicians from NUI Galway and the Saolta University Healthcare Group along with national and international collaborators. The faculty is drawn from a variety of specialities and healthcare disciplines. The centre's focus is improving patient safety and quality of care through research and its application in practice.

The ICAPSS research can be categorised into four themes:
1. Patient Experience- e.g. access to healthcare for people with disabilities, learning from patient complaints.
2. Doctor Experience – e.g. stress, burnout, psychological resilience.
3. Patient Safety- e.g. learning from errors and adverse events, feasibility study of a safety intervention for primary care, hand hygiene compliance in the ICU.
4. Medical Education/simulation- e.g. improving preparedness of interns for clinical practice, effectiveness of medical education interventions.
