We work on drug delivery systems to address compliance and efficacy issues. Our main work is in oral administration of peptides and we have published extensively on the use of permeation enhancers and nanoparticles to deliver insulin. Current projects funded by Science Foundation Ireland are also on the intra-articular administration of anti-inflammatory drugs in nanoparticles for osteoarthritis. We are also coordinating the new EU project, BUCCAL-PEP, focussing on delivering a GLP-1 analog across the cheek in a thin film. I have supervised over 20 PhDs to completion since 2001 and the current group comprises 2 PhDs and 4 Postdocs, all grant funded.

The areas where we are focussing on for new PhDs are in nanoparticle concepts for oral administration of peptides, nanoparticles for intra-articular delivery to treat arthritis, and in buccal patch development. We are always looking for researchers with in vivo pharmacology experience and also in pharmaceutical formulation. I give active grant writing support to PhD applicants in search of their own grant support to the IRC and other funding bodies.
