We have established an ICSI laboratory within the School of Veterinary Medicine to carry out research in equine assisted reproduction, specifically energy metabolism of the equine oocyte and embryo during in vitro maturation and culture and how it relates to developmental competence and health of resulting offspring. I also have an interest in using the mare as a model for 'One Health' research synergy to investigate oocyte maturation in humans and evaluate the epigenetic effects of endemic metabolic aberrations such as obesity and diabetes.
Research projects can be based on any aspect of how metabolism is interrelated with oocyte and embryo developmental competence with a focus on the importance of mitochondrial health.
