My Work

Fidelma Dunne holds a Personal Professorship in Medicine at the National University of Ireland. In addition she is a Consultant Endocrinologist at Galway University Hospitals. Her major research interest is in the area of pregnancy and diabetes. She has published >150 peer review publications and has received >15m euro in grant funding either as PI or collaborator of national and international projects.

Her research group are currently conducting a number of studies as part of the ATLANTIC DIP programme. These studies are focusing on:

- Pregnancy Outcomes in women with Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes
- The impact of Pre pregnancy care (PPC)
- Process of care delivery for Diabetes before during and after pregnancy
- Screening for GDM
- Insulin vs metformin for GDM treatment
- Persistent glucose abnormalities following GDM
- Prevention of Type 2 Diabetes following GDM
- Genetics of GDM
- Psychosocial implications of GDM
- Economic evaluation of GDM

In addition she is involved in a multicentre European funded FP7 programme on prevention of GDM (DALI) using Vitamin D and lifestyle intervention, CONCEPTT a JDRF funded programme examining the benefits of CGMS in women with Type 1 Diabetes during pregnancy and EVOLVE a pan-European collection of outcomes for women with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes treated with insulin.

Professor Dunne is the only Irish committee member of the Diabetes in Pregnancy Study Group (EASD) of EASD and is the President of the International Diabetes in Pregnancy Study Groups (IADPSG) from 2016-2020. She is a Fulbright scholar for 2014-2015 having completed a scholarship programme at Columbia University New York and is a member of the research committee of the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO).
