The gastrointestinal tract provides a unique environment that relies on the intricate communication of the intestinal barrier with a highly diverse microbiota. Disturbances such as inflammation in Inflammatory Bowel Disease or intestinal infections alter both the host and the microbiome, leading to transmigration of neutrophils as first responders and further changes in other innate or adaptive immune cell populations. Our main interest is how the chemical milieu in the gut including oxygen and reactive species maintain homeostatis, who are the major players involved, and how can we modify disease outcomes.
Our laboratory employs PCR and protein science to identify signaling complexes, analyses of innate immune cell populations and their functions, epithelial barrier function studies, and studies that reveal the importance of the microbiome or certain defined bacterial strains for intestinal function.
Current projects include a detailed interactome analysis of a ROS-generating enzyme in homeostasis and at early time points during infection (cell biology, protein science, mass spectrometry, bioinformatics).
