Alistair Nichol is the director of the HRB-funded Irish Critical Care-Clinical Trials Network (ICC-CTN), which he established in 2015. The CTN aims to support efforts to conduct high quality clinical trials on the Island of Ireland in the field of critical care medicine. The mission of the CTN is to improve outcomes (reducing mortality and morbidity) of patients requiring Intensive Care Unit (ICU) treatment, and to ensure that these outcomes are achieved in an efficient and effective manner that allows access to this critical resource to be maximised.
We had a number of studies generate significant results for the Covid-19 pandemic, including results of 16 treatment options, improving patient care and the identification
for the first time of how a person’s genetics can affect them becoming severely ill. We are now further developing our ongoing studies to design a coordinated, more rapid response for future pandemics. The ICC-CTN is currently coordinating trials across a range of critical illness disease areas, such as trauma, acute respiratory failure, community acquired pneumonia and pandemic preparedness. A list of trials and related information can be found here.
We have a diverse portfolio of clinical studies from observation through to phse III clinical trials. Our group has a particular interst in novel trial designs.
The areas of research are 1) Pandemic Preparedness, 2) Trauma, 3) Out of Hospital Cardiac Arrest, 4 Mechanical Ventialtion and others.
We are also able to facialte methodology and precision medicine research
