My Work

I am an experienced Epidemiologist and Clinical Trialist with an outstanding international research record in Population Health and Health Services Research and its effective translation for improved health. The focus of my work is on cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity across the lifecourse. I have published over 200 publications (http://research.ucc.ie/profiles/C010/patriciakearney) in peer reviewed international journals including the Lancet, BMJ, International Journal of Epidemiology, JAMA. My work in large scale epidemiology includes analysis of national and international datasets, e.g. analysis of SLAN and TILDA to estimate the incidence and prevalence of diabetes in Ireland and the cost of diabetes and analysis of international data to estimate association between thyroid function and cardiovascular disease. I am the lead PI in Ireland for TRUST, an EU FP7 funded clinical trial of thyroxine versus placebo in older people with subclinical hypothyroidism and am a co-PI for OPERAM a Horizon2020 funded clinical trial of pharmacotherapy optimisation in older adults with multi-morbidity. I have worked with CRF-C to develop expertise and capacity in clinical trial research including a network of 100 GPs and satellite sites across Munster. I am leading a pilot intervention in primary care to prevent childhood obesity.
