Prof Lois leads a programme of preclinical and clinical research into diabetic retinopathy and its complications, namely diabetic macular oedema (DMO) and proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR). This research extends from pathogenic mechanisms of disease and risk stratification to new therapies, including determining the most cost-effective therapeutic alternatives for this disease. Prof Lois is PI of two large multicentric NIHR-funded clinical studies, DIAMONDS and EMERALD. DIAMONDS is evaluating the clinical- and cost-effectiveness of diode subthreshold micropulse laser for the treatment of patients with mild (central retinal subfield thickness of less than 400 microns) DMO. EMERALD is evaluating a new alternative approach for the surveillance of patients with previously treated and inactive DMO and PDR which involves multimodal imaging and review of patients by trained ophthalmic photographers/imaging technicians. Prof Lois is also currently leading a phase-2 clinical trial evaluating a new potential treatment for DMO, ARA290.
Projects could involve testing the diagnostic accuracy and cost-effectiveness of new diagnostic modalities; developing and undertaking early phase clinical trials; developing and evaluating experimental models of retinal disease. Projects could have basic and clinical sciences components.
