My Work

My research focuses on applying epidemiological approaches to public health practice. Within this integrating pathogen genome data in the study and control of infectious diseases across humans and sources in the natural environment is a particular interest. I have a strong interest in vaccination and related research on supporting vaccination (not on vaccine development). Within these areas work ranges from more technical and theoretical (PubMed ID: 18403712, 17479890, 30689731, 23979428) to the highly applied (PubMed ID: 27955789, 30787018, 26063722, 24690264). A developing area is educational research.

Potential Projects

What is the ecology of pathogens and antimicrobial resistance in Irish populations? Specific projects will consider integrating pathogen genomic analysis with other aspects of epidemiology in e.g. the sources of zoonotic infections, modelling person to person transmission, or identifying reservoirs and transmission of determinants of antimicrobial resistance.

How can we optimise immunisation rates? Projects under this topic can include research on educational interventions at many levels, operational research including the application of health informatics, and approaches and student proposed ideas.
