My Work

Carmel is Professor of Primary Care Pharmacy and former Head of the School of Pharmacy at Queen’s University Belfast. Her areas of interest are health services research pertaining to older people, primary care and pharmacy practice, evidence-based health care, and the development of interventions. She is currently leading on a cross-border pilot randomised controlled trial (RCT) which involves general practices in Northern Ireland and the border counties of the Republic. The trial is testing a novel theory-based intervention targeting the prescribing of appropriate polypharmacy. She is also supervising a number of systematic reviews, including the updating of a Cochrane review on appropriate polypharmacy. Recently completed studies include a large RCT in over 80 care homes in four regions in the UK assessing the effect of pharmacist prescribers who have assumed responsibility of prescribing for care home residents, and a non-randomised pilot study assessing the feasibility of a community pharmacist-delivered intervention targeting adherence in patients prescribed polypharmacy.

Potential Projects

I can offer supervision in the broad field of health services research, encompassing primary care, care of older people, long-term care and links to pharmacy. I have a particular interest in prescribing of medicines and interventions which may improve the quality of prescribing. I have expertise in mixed methods, systematic reviewing and have also led a number of randomised controlled trials. Most of the studies which I have led/supervised have been set in primary care or long-term care.
