Substantial evidence from population-based studies and trials support a protective role for several plant derived compounds called flavonoids in relation to cardio metabolic and cognitive health. However, to date the relative importance of the gut microbiome remains elusive. Projects will involve the analysis of complex datasets of habitual diet, gut microbiome and a wealth of health endpoints to determine the relative importance of the gut microbiome in explaining associations between flavonoids, plant-based diets and health. The project will involve some novel biomarker development, working to more accurately predict associations between flavonoids and health using a combined biomarker and dietary intake approach. The project will involve extensive international collaborations and the possibility of research stays at partner sites (e.g. in US, Denmark, Germany, or France).
