Delirium is common following surgery and may indicate an underlying, unrecognised, dementia process. Our group is further exploring this link and the implications for patients developing acute cognitive symptoms postoperatively. Our most relevant publication can be found here: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31082921/.
Clinical guidelines relating to postoperative delirium are proliferating but very little is offered to guide longer term follow up and management of those people who develop delirium and delirium symptoms postoperatively. Our group are garnering funding, collaborating internationally and conducting research to provide an evidence base for much needed guidance and policy in this area in the near future. The successful candidate would be supported to plan, conduct and report clinical research within this realm. Our group works within the wider Ageing Research Group in QUB and in tandem with the Primary Joint Outcomes Unit in Musgrave Park Hospital. In my clinical role I run weekly memory clinics.
