My research interests focus on a broad range of protozoan and helminthic parasites (including Cryptosporidium , Toxoplasma, Babesia, Neospora, Trypanosomes , heartworm, liver and rumen fluke) chiefly with the aim to investigate their importance for human and/or animal health in Ireland. Currently I am involved in a number of collaborative projects with Teagasc, DAFM and MSD Ireland that aim to determine the distribution and clinical importance of a range of arthropod vectors and vector-borne diseases in Ireland. I am the Irish representative on VectorNet, a European network for sharing data on the geographic distribution of arthropod vectors, transmitting human and animal disease agents. Current projects focus on the distribution of biting midges and mosquitoes, and the prevalence and molecular epidemiology of tickborne diseases. I am also involved in various projects focused on the parasites of deer, their zoonotic potential and their impact on the health and behaviour of the deer. I am also always happy to discuss other potential parasitology projects candidates may have a particular interest in.
